Exhibition Lichtenstein Milan 2019

Exhibition Lichtenstein Milan 2019

Exhibition Lichtenstein Milan 2019

History of the artist

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-97) is an artist whose image is inextricably linked to comics. Among the Pop Art artists, he is the one who most manages to create an unmistakable style, remaining faithful to the last production. Exhibition Lichtenstein Milan 2019. Lichtenstein is called to arms during the Second World War and has the first encounter with the military world, which will often be the inspiration for his first artistic production, and with comics inspired by war. It seems, in fact, that one of his superiors asked him to reproduce them by magnifying cartoons drawn from comics of war. This gave rise to the stylistic idea of his art, although Lichtenstein began to produce in this style only in the early 1960s. In 1962, with a solo show in New York at the famous gallery owner Leo Castelli, the rise of Lichtenstein begins. We are in the years in which the phenomenon of consumerism and Pop culture explodes at world levels. The climate of serene trust in the present and in the future clearly contrasts with the previous pessimism of an existentialist nature. The images of magnified comics proposed by Lichtenstein seem to fully reflect the need to surround oneself with new images, objective and devoid of existential anxieties.

The period of fame

Beginning in 1963, Lichtenstein began to reinterpret, always based on printed reproductions, typical themes and masters of the twentieth century avant-gardes. It is not a question of mere citationism or the desire to reinterpret the art of the past but of its deconstruction and stylistic re-reading that brings the image back to a contemporary dimension. If in the early works with this Lichtenstein cut he proposes a remake of a precise work, as in Monet's Rouen Cathedrals, in works referring to Expressionism or Surrealism he intends to reconstruct a style and not a particular subject or painting. The art of modern avant-gardes does not constitute a demanding tradition for Lichtenstein, a path that must be followed but is like an object, a tool to freely dispose of until it becomes an instrument of a totally renewed and numbing linguistic and creative game. His art, produced until the mid-nineties, remains as one of the most original expressions of American culture after World War II. At Exhibition Lichtenstein Milan 2019 you will find all the artist's works.

Exhibition Lichtenstein Milan 2019

From May 1st to September 8th 2019 the Milan MUDEC hosts “Roy Lichtenstein. Multiple visions "a retrospective entirely dedicated to the artist that is confirmed among the most important of the American artistic panorama of the twentieth century and one of the greatest exponents of Pop Art. The exhibition itinerary, divided into 8 thematic sections, tells the artistic evolution of Lichtenstein from his beginnings in the Fifties, focusing his attention above all on the printed image, the technique underlying his art. On display more than 100 works including paintings of large dimensions, tapestries, sculptures, videos and photographs from private collections and prestigious international museums such as the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, the Walker Center in Minneapolis and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
