Pescara: seaside resorts and history in Abruzzo

The city was officially founded by Romans, as the ancient port Theate (the present city of Chieti). During Middle Ages it became part of the Frederick II Empire and later was annexed to the Kingdom of Naples.

The stunning “Sea Bridge”

The southern and northern waterfront promenades (Lungomare Sud and Nord) are connected by the beautiful “Sea Bridge”, the “Ponte del Mare”. Inaugurated in December 2009 became soon the symbol of the city. The ‘Bridge’ is divided into two paths (bicycle and pedestrian) that create the image of the third dimension.

The secondary braces system develope bevels and evoke the image of two wings intersecting themselves. The central pier is 50 meters high around and from thr higher side you can admire the south and the north promenades, the Pescara river, the bell tower of the town, the marina and the Apennine mountains.

A look at History: the old town and the House of D’Annunzio the Poet

Corso Manthoné is the heart of the old city of Pescara. Here you can find the house of the famous poet D’Annunzio and of the known writer Ennio Flaiano (at the town entrance there is a bust dedicated to Flaiano). The area has been restored and upgraded over time to become the center of Nightlife in Pescara, along with the waterfront area, and the cultural community center. The street is full of nice cafes where you can eat anything, enjoy the typical dishes from Abruzzo, or spend the evening in the various pubs and wine bars.

The Museum ‘Casa Natale di Gabriele d’Annunzio‘ housed in the palace that belonged to D’Annunzio’s family from 1800 in Corso Gabriele Manthoné, 116 and became a national monument in 1927. D’Annunzio remained attached to his city and the city decided to recall the great poet building this museum.

Here photos, explanatory panels, memories and objects that belonged to the family and to the great poet. Furthermore, the artworks of the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti and other local painters illustrate the places sung by the poet.
