Why Naples is called “City of Parthenope”?
The city’s name comes from the legend that its founder was Parthenope, a Greek girl who loved the young Cimone. Her father, however, hindered their union and had promised her to Eumaeus.
One day the young couple decided to run away together to a new land. On their arrival the nature began to produce a lush vegetation, it was a real paradise. The story of a so fertile land attracted new inhabitants to the island. They built new villages lowland and the coast.
Commercial activities were developed and they made, also, walls to protect the city and erected two temples dedicated to Ceres and Venus, protectors of the city. Meanwhile, Parthenope had become the mother of twelve children and was loved and respected by all for her mercy, her loyalty: everybody respected her and the decisions she took.
Naples’s secrets: discovering Naples Underground
Naples Underground has an ancient origin. The tunnels were dug by the Greeks to extract tuff from and build the city walls. During the Roman Empire it was expanded to collect rainwater and built a water supply system, which has served the city until 1885. During the Second World War, the underground tunnels were used as a refuge from the bombing from about 4,000 people.
From the Underground comes from the legendary spirit of the “Monaciello”, a specter that inhabited the houses of Naples. If the inhabitant of the house appeared sympathetic to the Monaciello, he could help the family to find money in the boxes, but he was also able to be unpleasant, if the landlord didn’t showed devotion to him.
