The Colossus of the city and the Challenge of Barletta

Barletta is strategically located on the southeastern Italy. It is part of Ofanto Valley with its beautiful landscapes, and unique natural setting. It is recommended a visit to the Ofanto river, that flows into the sea near the village of Margherita di Savoia, north of Barletta.
The city is famous for the challenge of Barletta: this medieval battle took place on the 13th February 1503 in the plain between Andria and Corato and saw thirteen Italian knights against thirteen French knights. The battle ended with the victory of the Italians, led by Ettore Fieramosca.
Barletta has a long history.  Whit its Apulian origin, it was enlarged by offering refuge to the inhabitants of Canosa. In 1228 Frederick II appointed his son Henry as his successor. After centuries of decline, it recovered the middle of last century, becoming an important horticultural and commercial center.

The Colossus, called Arè (dialect of Heraclitus) is a bronze statue of over 5 meters high. This oriental work of the IV century A.D. It depicts probably the roman emperor Valentinian I. According to tradition the Colossus, forged by this Polifobo, was stolen by the Venetians during the plunder of Constantinople in 1204 and abandoned while they returned on the beach of Barletta, because of a storm that stopped them and their heavy load.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four Palatine churches of Apulia, along with the cathedral San Nicola in Bari, the Basilica of Acquaviva delle Fonti and Altamura. Begun around 1140, enlarged in 1300, it is currently a complex but unitary organism and consists of two distinct parts: the Romanesque part, the oldest, and the back Gothic side. Santa Maria Maggiore is the outcome of a series of successive architectural styles over the centuries, since the pre-Christian era. Bus Metaponto – Barletta, travel by bus to Barletta!

Swabian Castle of Frederick II

The Castle is the result of long layering process, due to the succession of dynasties in power, between the 11th century and the 18th century. I principle it was a fortress with defensive purposes, surrounded by the sea all around the castle that isolated it from enemy attacks. Nowadays it is a strategic point in the city life as well as a important urban core. The castle hosts the town library, the municipal museum and a conference-exhibition hall. Bus Metaponto – Barletta, travel by bus to Barletta!
