Parma: the italian “petit Paris”. Travel by bus to the elegant Emilian city of Parma
Small and pretty, the petit Parisis known as one of the most elegant and refined Emilian city, thanks to its northern European city atmosphere, with hundreds of bikes whizzing at full speed on the downtown bridges, its ancient buildings and the elegant-dressed ladies, in high heels parading as on a catwalk in the cobbled streets of old Town. It can be loved or not, like its inhabitants, but surely Parma is a city with a strong character, proud of its history and beauty.
Best places to visit in Parma
First stop is definitely Piazza Garibaldi, a meeting place from where the main streets of Parma start. Here it is also the Governor’s Palace, an important venue for temporary exhibitions and events. Along Via Cavour, the hub of the shopping, you can easily get to the wonderful square where dominate Duomo, Baptistery and the Bishop’s Palace, image of the ancient Parma. Another stop not to be missed is the complex of the Pilotta, jewelry that includes: National Gallery, Teatro Farnese (still made of wood), the Palatine library, the archaeological museum and Bodoni Museum.
Not far away there are also the Camera di San Paolo, frescoed by Correggio and the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria della Steccata. The meals are a key moment in the small Emilian capital, we can recommend two restaurants: Gallo d’Oro (Borgo della Salina) for more refined palates, but with very reasonable prices, or the Oste Magno (Borgo Angelo Mazza), for those who want to experience the true atmosphere of the traditional inn.
Another area not to be missed is the Oltretorrente, reached by following the bank of Parma’s river and crossing the Ponte di Mezzo. This is one of the oldest and most experienced part of the city, the scene of anti-fascist resistance. Via D’Azeglio is the meeting point of students and young people, full of bars and pubs where they meet at aperitif time. Then there via Bixio, increasingly multi-cultural center, to get to Portovenere d’Emilia: Via della Salute, with its colorful houses file characteristics.
In spring and summer, when the afternoon hours start to warm up the streets of downtown, a solution to get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful hilly landscape is definitely Parma Torrechiara, located just 30 minutes from downtown and known for it beautiful castle, one of the symbols of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. Entrance costs 3 € and is free on the first Sunday of the month. A tour of the rooms of the old residence built by the nobleman Pier Maria Rossi, even through some frescoed rooms, a medieval catapult in Parma with all its charm and its legends: the story goes, that there are still inside the Torrechiara two ghosts.
