“Modena, magnificent city, about art, motors and delicious cuisine.”
Modena: birthplace of Ferrari and UNESCO World Heritage Site
The city of Modena offers tourists wonderful experiences, all concentrated in its heart, the city center. Full with beautiful places, Modena was for a long time capital of a dukedom that belonged to the d’Este family, who was in the city since 1598. The Duomo, Piazza Grande and Ghirlandina Tower were all declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ferrari Museum, located both in Modena and in Maranello, show how Modena is a city of motors.
An entire museum was dedicated to Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the most famous red race car. It is not simply a museum; it is a blend of unique elements giving birth to a spectacular experience: besides several cars, there is a 2500 square meters pavilion, with no columns at all and 19 projectors used to show Enzo Ferrari’s 90 years life.
Parmigiano Reggiano, Lambrusco, Aceto balsamico and more…
Two words: gnocco fritto (fried gnocchi). This particular dish really is what you want to try in Modena. Cold cuts, cheese, or even Nutella are its best friends. Squares shaped bread dough is where the recipe starts off from. Other products that you may find in this area are: parmigiano reggiano, tortellini, cotechino, Lambrusco and the typical balsamic vinegar, which is made from the white grape harvested on the hills and goes through a process that involves several wooden barrels. Last but not least, the Nocino, the most famous liquor in the area. Nocino, literally “small walnut”, is made from the green husk of the walnut. These have a really intense flavor and strong digestive properties. According to the popular tradition, people used to collect walnuts on June 24th, when they celebrate Saint John the Baptist. People believed that the morning dew of this day in particular could solve any medical problem, especially for digestive illnesses. People thought the Nocino could cure anything!
