Metaponto: a marvel of Magna Grecia
Metaponto was founded by Greek colonists of Achaia in the second half of the seventh century BC. Metaponto became soon one of the most important cities of Magna Grecia.The city with a deep history and rich culture and natural beauties is one of the most famous seaside resorts of the Ionian coast of Lucania.
Dream beaches and Relax
Sandy beaches and crystal clear waters characterize the coast around Metaponto. Unlike the Tyrrhenian coast, the fine sand has a yellow-golden color with wide sandy-pebbles beaches all along the south coast, close to Pollino National Park.
The “Palatine Tables”: Temple of Hera
The temple dedicated to the goddess Hera was built in the sixth century BC. The name came after the identification with an ancient palace and it is an hexastyle peripteral Greek temple. The temple has a central cell with adyton and it is preceded by a portico, composed of 15 columns and Doric capitals.
Numerous remains of terracotta decoration, statuettes and ceramics, along with smaller column fragments were found near the temple during the 1926 excavations and are now kept at the Archaeological Museum of Metaponto.
Excursion to Matera: the “City of Stones”
Matera is the city of the Stones, because the original urban core, which develops from the natural caves carved into the rock and then moldes into increasingly complex structures within two large natural amphitheatres: Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano.
The picturesque landscape and the beauty of this city have been recognized by UNESCO in 1993, declaring the Stones of Matera World Heritage Site.
Metaponto Beach Festival
The Festival takes place August 17th to 19th in the beautiful setting of the Torremare Castle of Metaponto. The festival involves musicians from southern Italy. Along with the musical performances, the event aims to learn about the uniqueness of the historical cultural heritage of Basilicata through guided tours and excursions on the Ionian coast.
