Bus Frosinone – Livorno, travel by bus to Tuscany

Livorno: sharp humor in the heart of Tuscany

The city was born by the will of the Medici family who entrusted to Bernardo Buontalenti the work of building an “ideal city” (urban utopia in vogue during the Renaissance). Laws Livornine, promulgated in order to populate the city built around the port, guaranteed the freedom (especially religious) and refuge to the persecuted, thus encouraging the immigration of Spanish traders, Arabs, Jews and Armenians.
Even today, the strength of Livorno is its commercial port built by Cosimo I in 1571. The large bank for protection of structures was built by Robert Dudley (son of the lord of Leicester). Livorno is the city of Vernacoliere, cult magazine of satire in Tuscan dialect, whose poisonous humor became famous all over Italy.

Quattro Mori Monument between history and curiosity

The Monument of Quattro Mori is the best known symbol of Livorno. Its history hides many surprises: first, this work should be properly called “Monument to Ferdinand I”. It owes its name to the four realistic and vigorous bronze figures of Moors chained to the stand.
It is located in Piazza Micheli, beyond the Mediceo Harbour. The work was commissioned by the Grand Duke Ferdinand, but finished by his son Cosimo II. It is made up of the statue of Ferdinand I de ‘Medici and four bronze statues depicting pirates in chains. The statue arrived by sea in Livorno in 1601. At his feet lie the four massive chained bronzes, added at a later date (1626).

The monument, moved and modified several times, became famous enough to be the symbol of a city thanks to the secondary figures and a curious circumstance. There is a point in Piazza Micheli from which you can see simultaneously the noses of the Four Moors statues. Come to visit Livorno and try it for yourself!

The Venice district

The district “La Venezia” is one of the most beautiful areas of Livorno city. This neighborhood is so called because it is crossed by Navicelli channel and a ditch lined with palaces, just like the city of Venice. In the past, the channels were used for trades, while today it is a tourist attraction with boats and restaurants on the banks.
From here you can easily reach the Island of Gorgona, part of the great National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago. This and much more awaits you in the beautiful Livorno, book now your bus ticket!
