Salerno is a lively town in Campania: it does not seem a metropolis, thanks to the walkable historical city center, the history of its the monuments and the high quality standards. Salerno offers various attractions outdoors, like walking on the long and wild Promenade, explore the city center, full of narrow streets, artisan and small shops.
In Largo Campo square, you can admire the” Fishes Fountain”, due to the famous architect Luigi Vanvitelli. The fountain looks like a semi-circular pool on two steps. The facade, trapezoidal, is marked by four pilasters topped by a pediment and four marble vases.
The fountain has five water gushes: one from a marble basin placed in a recess at the center of the gable, two from dolphins placed on the edge of the tub, and two from Bacchus masks placed between the two pairs of pilasters.
The square has a double face: by day is a shopping area and in the evening, when the shops are closed and restaurants and bars open, the square is full of young people.
Arechi Castle: panoramic view over the city of Salerno
The name of this impressive fortress comes from Duke Arechis II who, made it an impregnable bulwark of his fief, transferring the capital of his Duchy of Benevento to Salerno around the eighth century.
Perched on top of the city, the Castle dominates the Salerno Gulf. Here princes and lords have spent their lives. In 1077 the Arechi Castle was abducted from Lombards and the Norman conquered the area, that became a base for the knights of northern Europe.
In fact the greatest danger for the population came from the sea, as the numerous incursions of the Saracens.
The Arechi Castle is formed by a structure with a central area protected by towers, joined together with a stunning crenellated walls. The fortification has replaced, in reality an existing and much older structure. The architecture is typically medieval with a system of fortifications and drawbridges that made him, over the centuries, an impregnable stronghold. The castle is illuminated at night: don’t loose the visit during the night!
