An astonishing feat of engineering: the swing bridge of Taranto
The Bridge of San Francesco di Paola connects the island of the ancient town with the mainland of Borgo Nuovo. Symbol of the city, was inaugurated in 1887. The bridge is divided into two arms that turned independently of each other around a vertical pin and it is activated through hydraulic turbines. The structure was renovated during the years 1957-1958, when was places an electric type operation, keeping the engineering principles of the bridge.
The swing bridge of Taranto a very unusual type, with two spans that separate at the bridge’s center and pivot sideways from the bridge’s outer ends. The action of the gears separates them from each other and rotated on one side in an alternating way: at first moves the one closest to the Island, then the one connected to the city. The operation lasts about three minutes, the two halves of the swing bridge turn to Mar Piccolo and are wide open like the arms of a friend who welcomes you into his house. During the operation the two part of the city are temporarily separated. It ‘also provided an extraordinary opening in May for the transit of the charming seaside procession dedicated to the patron saint of Taranto, San Cataldo.
The Aragonese Castle
The castle is a reconstruction of an earlier Norman-Swabian-Angevin fortress built in the same spot but profoundly different. The new castle had a vaguely similar shape a scorpion with five round towers, located on the corners of the building. Nowadays the castle is owned by the Navy that organizes free guided tours every day of the year.
One of the various exciting parts to visit, walking on the outside walls is undoubtedly charming: there you can enjoy an incredible landscape on the underlying blue sea. This is the best part of the castle estate and the most striking, from which you can also see the structure of the swing bridge. On the other hand, you can visit the gruesome torture room, designed with a large hole on the ceiling. The explanation for this hole is simple: it had the task to amplify the screams of the tortured, so the other prisoners could hear, in order to terrorize them.
