Travel by bus to Avellino: history and folklore in the heart of Campania
“Montevergine with hat, Avellino with umbrella”
This very common proverb explains as the citizens of Avellino do a sort of home-made forecasting. In fact whenever the clouds overhanging the top of Mount Partenio, in the city will rain. The city is located in the heart of Apennine Mountains of Campania Region and it is dominated by the massifs of the Mounts Picentini and Partenio. The Mount Partenio is famous as a place of pilgrimage to venerate the Madonna of Montevergine in the Benedictine Sanctuary of the twelfth century, a charming place at an altitude of 1272 m. The atmospheric conditions of Avellino allow the growth of the exquisite “hazelnuts of Avellino“. After its destruction by the Lombards, the inhabitants founded the new city of Avellino on a tuff rock. The demographic and urban development was rather slow because of violent earthquakes and invasions by the Normans and the Aragonese..
The Montevergine Sanctuary was founded by William of Montevergine, but it was only after the death of the monk, that the sacred site reached its splendor. In fact, between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries was enriched with many artworks, thanks to the donations of the feudal lords, popes and kings: it was in this period that was donated the painting of the Virgin Mary, venerated today in the cathedral, but also numerous relics. During World War II the Sanctuary housed secretly the Holy Shroud of Turin, strongly wanted by Adolf Hitler. The construction of the Ancient Basilica of Montevergine begun in 1126 in the Romanesque style, but it was finished with Gothic elements, such as the beautiful iron portal. The Carnival Party, the Zeza and the Barrels Palio
The city is full of ancient and traditional festivals such as the Zeza and the Barrels Palio. The Zeza is a carnival show , sung to the sound of the trombone and the bass drum. This tradition was probably born in the second half of the seventeenth century. At least until the mid-nineteenth century the Zeza was represented in the courtyards of the palaces, in the streets, in the bars and squares. Banned from the streets of Naples in the nineteenth century “for its licentious and obscene allusions and speeches”, is now represented in Avellino in the carnival period. The Barrels Palio is a medieval mold competition that takes place on August 12 between the seven districts of the city of Avellino. All the “contradas” challenge each other by rolling with a curved crowbar a barrel of about two tons, pushing it along Corso Umberto I. The route, about 450 meters, it is all uphill, so that becomes rather difficult to be able to advance the barrels to the goal. Bus from Pescara to Avellino, travel by bus to Avellino
