Sala Consilina: a city of Lombard origin
Sala Consilina was the largest center of Vallo di Diano, the valley certainly populated since the ninth century BC, as evidenced by the vast necropolis. We have informations about the city since the Roman empire: the center of Consilinum, the ancient name of the modern Sala Consilina, built during the Lombard colonization. Date back to the period of Normans we find the churches of St. Leo IX, St. Stephen and St. Eustatius. In 1246 Frederick II destroyed the city in revenge of a conspiracy. The Aragonese, in 1497, destroyed Sala Consilina for the same reason.
The Castle of Sala Consilina
Soon after a beautiful walk through the streets of the old town, you should visit the fortified castle of Sala Consilina, built by the Lombards in the seventh and eighth centuries AD with the formation of the Duchy of Salerno by Robert Guiscard. The castle is 819 meters high and dominates the whole Vallo di Diano.
During the late Middle Age the castle was the focus of constant conflicts and, according to legend, the wife and daughter of the defeated prince Sanseverino were walled up alive. Afterwards it lost its defensive function and was abandoned. It is possible to visit the ruins following the path that leads to the upper part of Sala Consilina. There are also interesting nature trails for walking or hiking.
