Bologna: educated, Red and Fat: amazing food and vivacity

“I sleep on the grass and I’ve got plenty of friends next to me, the lovers in Piazza Grande, I know everything of their sorrows and love, right or wrong that it may be.” Lucio Dalla
Educated, Red and Fat: these are the attributes that people give to Bologna, state capital of Emilia Romagna. Educated because it is the city of one of the first universities in Italy. Red as the color of its houses and roofs. Fat because of its typical cuisine. Piazza Maggiore, also known as Piazza Grande, is the center of all the religious activities and everyday life. It is famous for the Nettuno Fountain, which is watched over by three important buildings: Palazzo Comunale on the west, Palazzo dei Banchi on the East and Basilica di San Petronio on the south. In front of this last building, you can admire the magnificent Palazzo del Podestà. According to a myth, Piazza Maggiore can be hostile to university students: it seems like if they walk through it passing by the center, they will never graduate! Two towers, Asinelli and Garisenda, watch over Bologna, and the Basilica of Santo Stefano, together with other sacred buildings, are part of the famous Sette Chiese. The triangular Piazza named after Santo Stefano, which was reconstructed recently, holds Chiesa del Crocifisso, Basilica del Sepolcro, Chiesa di San Vitale and Sant’Agricola, Pilato’s Courtyard, Chiesa del Martyrium, Chiostro Medievale and Santo Stefano Museum.
